This is where you get to design your dream
guitar. Most things are possible and don't cost the
earth!
The starting point is body shape, wood choice, neck profile and
scale length. Essentially, you choose a configuration that
suits you - not just what is available. In doing so, think
about the type of music you like, the players and their instruments
and the sound they create. We're all ears hear at MG-GUITARS
and know a thing or two about great tone. Now isn't that a
bit different to going into your local music shop and being sold
to?
A note about finishing. MG-GUITARS
are typically finished in a Carnuba wax, hand-rubbed, or Wudtone finishes which utilise
natural pigmented dyes, waxes and lacqures to
create stunning finishes. All MG-GUITARS have a natural look
and 'organic' feel - the finishes allow the tone of the wood
to contribute their magic to the sound of the instrument.
Body options reflect the classics - T-Type,
S-Type, LP-Type, and hybrids like the TS-Type. And for
basses - the J-Type, the P-Type and of course the hybrid
PJ-Type. MG-GUITARS sources unusual combinations - as shown
on the right and in the Gallery. Wood choice is important but but just
one of the ingredients that combine to make a great instrument.
MG-GUITARS uses bodies produced by GuitarBuildUK, and Renegade GuitarWorks
(USA).
Necks are typically Canadian Rock Maple with Rosewood or Ebony fingerboards by Allparts, Olivewood Guitars (Canada) or Might Mite with a variety of neck profiles fret options. Necks are either finished in a highly durable light poly lacqure or hand rubbed utilising Wudone's neck finishes.
A note about pickup choice - the world is your oyster and we will accomodate all commers (Seymore Duncan, Bare Knuckle etc.). However, we are impressed by Tonerider Pickups which provide a great stock solution. For excellence in tone and noiseless pickup technology MG-GUITARS likes to use Lace Sensor Pickups and for the boutique enthusiasts and tone junkies hand made custom wound pickups are available through Catswhisker Pickups.
Hardware: MG-GUITARS is fussy about the hardware used for bridge and tuners. Wilkinson hardware are used in our stock builds and, for the rockers, genuine Floyd Rose tremolos. However, we like to experiment - for example - the "new kid on the block" from Wudtone - a bridge with superb tuning stability and sustain - a great option for a premium build.
